Landscape and Abstraction

The landscape painting is memory and imagination, it evolves in the pictorial space and reaches beyond it as a land grab. It is a succession of states that deny any claim to finality, a becoming and fading away, a transformation in which the process of painting enables and permits a fruitful coincidence. And in which the artist intervenes again and again to give form to chance. The chronology of growth is inscribed in the layers of paint.

"Real art has the capacity to make us nervous. By reducing the work of art to its content and then interpreting that, one tames the work of art. Interpretation makes art manageable, conformable."

(Susan Sontag: Against Interpretation and other Essays)
